“We’ve arrived in St. Maarten Miss Maraj. This will be our last
meeting. It was my pleasure of being your pilot. The time is now 4:30
p.m. on this hot sunday afternoon. Good bye."
I looked
towards the cockpit surprised. I swiftly wiped my face before exiting
the plane. I walked into the airport and got my bags when I noticed that
none of my bodyguards were with me. I was alone. All alone. Anything
could happen to me. I searched for a restroom. When I got in one of the
stalls, I pulled out my hand mirror. I took off my blond lacefront. I
didn’t want to be noticed. I hand-combed through my natural curly locks
and pulled down the arms of my sweater. Once I did that, I walked out of
the stall and placed my sunglasses on my face.
As I walked out of
the arrival hall, I saw a sign with my name on it. No not Nicki Minaj
but Onika Maraj. A group of young girls, who happened to be passing, saw
the sign. One of the girls stopped in their tracks. So did I and slowly
started to walk backwards. I was a second too late, the girl noticed me
and I could see the anger in her face. The tears were brimming her
eyes. She charged towards me, but her friends were holding her back.
Their confused faces were so on point. They really didn’t know.
“You
worthless bitch!” the girl screamed at me before the tears fell from
her eyes. “You were my idol, you gave me a reason to keep my head up,
and now you’re here running from your problems! You lieing thief! How
could you?!?”
I just stood there frozen until people started
taking my picture and videotaping me. I couldn’t take this. I felt my
own tears running down my face. The friends of the girl soon realized
what she was talking about. Their angry faces were now bare. I looked
around and almost everyone there was either sad or angry with me.
“C’mon
Ana, she didn’t mean to.” The friend said to the girl. Then she turned
to me. “Why come here? Don’t you think that no one wants you around
them? You let so much people down. I’m surprised you’re even alive
still.” She spat at me. That stung. I wasn’t going to be put on the spot
for something I didn’t do.
“Listen right, I didn’t do it. I was
framed. I came here because I was here before and I liked it here. The
people are friendly or so I thought. I came here to start fresh. My
lawyers are busy trying to prove me not guilty. Until then I’m staying.”
I said calmly. Everyone was silent. I walked up to my taxi and got in.
The driver handed me a note. A credit card fell out. I picked it up and
placed it on my lap. The note said:
“You will be staying in Dawn
Beach. You will be living in an empty house with a pool, studio room and
a home theater. You will pay $5,500 as rent. You’re lucky this family
agreed to take you in. Only thing you have to do, is furnish it. I told
the owners of the house that you would be staying for 2 years. They say
you can stay for as long as you want, you pay good money.
I also
opened an account at Windward Island back so you would have money. All
you’re other accounts have been frozen for now. You have about 10
million in the account at the moment. I will add about 250,000.- every
month. Enjoy.
x”
I sighed. Now I had to shop and get stuff for the house. I tapped the driver on the shoulder.
“Yes?”
“Uhm, you any websites that I could go on to buy stuff right on the island?”
He just laughed in my face before answering. I was baffled. What was so funny?
“Well Dah-ling, you will have to go to deh shop yuhself and buy dha stuff. Some of dah places deliver.”
“O-oh okay … thanks.”
“No problem.”
I looked out of the window. I noticed that we were getting closer to the town. I just needed to make shure of something.
“Sir,
we’re on the dutch side right?” I asked and he nodded yes. I then
realized that I haven’t spoken to my mother. I needed to hear her voice.
I searched my bag, only to remember that I broke my phone back home.
“Sir, can you take me to the best electronic store? I would like to buy a new phone, preferably an iPhone.”
“Okay, well I’ll take you to the Istore on Front Street.”
When
we got there, he said he’d wait for me and that I could take my time. I
bought an IPhone 5s and they set it up for me. They gave me the card on
which my new phone number was written. I also purchased a case for it.
Pink ofcourse. When I was done, and went back to my taxi and got in.
“Got what you wanted?”
“Yes I did, thank you.” I said with a small smile.
We
were about on the hill that led to Dawn Beach. It had only one way of
getting there. I was abit scared because there was only one street light
and it was getting dark. The driver turned to me. I just looked at him.
“So, uhm, do I get a tip?” He asked me looking eagerly.
“Uh yes, when I reach my destination.” I said with abit of attitude. What did this guy think it was?
We
drove up to the gates of Dawn Beach Estates and he got out. He took my
bags out and and opened my door. I looked out and saw multiple houses.
Which one was I staying in?
“Uhm sir, I don’t think that this is my stop.” He laughed again.
“Yes
it is, now gimme mah tip. Mah wife gon have it out with me because I
drove with a criminal!” he exclaimed. It shocked me. It was like the
whole world hated me. Did the world think of me as a criminal?
I
paid the driver and picked up my luggage. I walked up to the gates. The
security guard saw me. He then went and opened the gates. He then called
someone on the phone. That took about a minute. He then walked up to
me.
“Miss Marah roight?” he asked me with this Jamaican accent. I
shook my head indicating ‘yes’. I was rubbing over my arms. It was abit
chilly. “Well, the owners of the house will be coming for you in a
minute.”
“Okay.”
He went back to doing his job and about 5
minutes later I saw a pair of headlights come towards me. The driver
walked out and came towards me. I was abit shy so I stayed quiet while
he spoke.
“Hi, my name is Denzel Simmons. I’m the owner of the
house you’ll be staying in. First thing I want to say, is I’m sorry that
you have to go through all of this. And also you’ll be staying with us
for the week sinds you still have to buy stuff for upstairs. I hope you
have had a pleasant flight. Here, let me take your bags.” He said and
took them from me. The car Kia Sportage 2013 edition. Cool car, if you
ask me.
I climbed in the passenger seat next to him. This was gonna be something when we reach at the house. I could feel it .
